November 2016 Birchbox

1. Phyto PhytokĂŠratine Repairing Mask: I love hair masks! This sample is a good size so I’m really glad their system picked it for me. Is there any chance I’ll buy this? Yes!
2. Coastal ScentsÂŽ Blush & Bronzer Palette: I don’t normally use blush and bronzer so I am probably going to give this sample away. I’m pretty sure I’ve gotten a lot of their products (mostly eye shadow) in boxes but haven’t tried anything because I don’t normally use eye shadow. Is there any chance I’ll buy this? Nope.
3. Benefit Cosmetics the POREfessional: Matte Rescue Invisible-Finish Mattifying Gel: I like the Benefit samples that I’ve tried so far so I’m really happy to have another product to try! Is there any chance I’ll buy this? Probably not.
4. Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye: I have a few different eye creams thanks to subscription boxes and don’t frequently use them. This item sounds slightly different and easy to use, though, so I’ll try adding it to my evening routine. Is there any chance I’ll buy this? Probably not.
5. Oribe Superfine Hairspray: I’ve heard great things about this brand and like some of their other products. I don’t use hairspray, however, so this sample will probably go to a friend who gets most of my hairspray samples. Is there any chance I’ll buy this? Nope.

I’ve been a Birchbox subscriber since November 2012 (4 years! whoa!) so I am obviously a Birchbox fan. I’m a little bit less of a fan now that box sample feedback doesn’t get me about $5 in Birchbox.com credit every month but I still like many of the samples they send so I’ll probably continue getting their box.

stila Matte About You Liquid Lipstick Trio: I love lip products so I’m glad this one was included in my box!

Living proof.ÂŽ No Frizz Nourishing Oil: I haven’t gotten to try this yet because I have a few other hair samples to get through first (yes, I’m this behind!) but I’m happy to have it because it looks like a nice product.

HUM Nutrition Raw Beauty Green Superfood Powder: Food in a Birchbox! FINALLY! They used to frequently send little food samples but then stopped. Guess they had some quality control issues or something like that. I thought it was interesting this sample had a health focus because in the past I usually received chocolate from them.

Acure Organics Coconut & Argan Oil Cleansing Towelettes: I love these!! I actually got the full-size version as an add-on item several weeks before this sample arrived. I’m happy to have the smaller pack because it takes up less space in my bag.

Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow: I believe I’ve tried and liked Marcelle products before but I don’t usually use BB cream so I gave this sample to a friend.

Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle – not from the August box – I’m not sure when I got this sample from (probably) Birchbox but I’m glad it appeared again (3rd time?) because I love it!

I still love Birchbox because they have sent me a lot of awesome samples over the years but I’m a bit sad about their recent points program changes. I really liked getting about $30 of products (usually awesome liquid soap, shampoo, conditioner) for just a few bucks (and however many minutes it took me to complete the sample surveys) every 6 months or so!

1. Miracle SkinÂŽ Transformer Treat & Conceal Eye & Face: This looks like a nice product and a fine sample size, but I don’t really use concealers so I don’t know if I should keep this or give it to a friend.

2. theBalmÂŽ cosmetics Stainiac: My favorite sample this month!! I love that it’s a lip product and that it’s a brand I recognize. I like that you can also use it on your cheeks, but will probably never actually try that.

3. Essentiel Elements Wake Up Rosemary Body Lotion: I am not crazy about lotion because I rarely use it and now have way too much of it, but I do love this little container. The scent is strong and I can’t decide if I like it or not (very minty?). My hands have been feeling dry and this box is currently next to my home “work spot,” so I ended up using some on my hands the other day. I like that it didn’t make me feel like getting up and washing my hands right away!

4. Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream: I tend to use a cleanser and not bother with any other face products, but this eye cream sounds pretty nice. Maybe I’ll get around to using it after I finally use up the other 2-3 eye cream samples I already have…

5. Curl Keeper by Curly Hair Solutions™ Curl Keeper Gel: I received a sample of a similar product (same brand) maybe a year ago and didn’t like it. Then I received a duplicate many months later and sent the Birchbox support team an email. This time it looks like it’s a slightly different product, but I’m still not excited. Maybe I should edit my survey again…

I love Birchbox because of their points system and do love many of the samples I get, but sadly it looks like this box was not a winner. Oh, well. My other recent Birchbox delivery (thanks to points and a sale!) was a Birchbox tank top (yay, new gym tops) and a box of La Fresh lens and screen cleaning wipes (really needed these). I’m happy and likely to spend a couple minutes editing my Birchbox profile…

December 2014 Birchbox

IMG_2680A shiny box AND a lot of samples! So exciting!!! :)

1. COOLA Tinted Matte SPF 30 for Face: I guess this is a good sample for trying the item and seeing if I like the formula. It’s not really a product I’m interested in, so I’ll either pass it on to a friend or keep it and be thankful that it’s a small (easy to use up!) sample.

2. Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel: This is a good sample size and my second one of this product (the other was in a Birchbox mystery sample pack – free with a full-size item order of $35+!). I recently saw a great review of this product, so I’m looking forward to trying it!

3. SeaRX Anti-Wrinkle Facial Lift Treatment Serum: This is a good “does my skin love it or hate it?” sample size. I don’t love serums and already have a bunch of serum samples from boxes, so this isn’t really an item I’m interested in trying.

4. Mirenesse iCurl Secret Weapon 24 Hour Mascara: I was excited about this item because I love mascara and am pretty sure I loved the last Mirenesse product I received. Sadly the experience turned out to be a bad one, though. I love the applicator and how the mascara makes my eyelashes look, but after about an hour the edges of my eyes started feeling odd. I tried to ignore it, but about half-way through dinner they started really hurting and it didn’t stop until I went into the bathroom and scrubbed the eye area (with water and soap). I wasn’t wearing any other eye make-up and hadn’t tried anything else new that day, so sadly it looks like my eyes and this mascara do not get along.

5-7. Davines Replumpling Shampoo, Conditioner, and Superactive: So happy I got these items!!!! I love trying these kinds of hair products and liked the last Davines samples I received. Looking forward to trying everything!! Thinking about throwing it all in my gym bag so I can actually try it this week…

Pretty awesome box! I hope they send a little lifestyle item in January, though. I love it when they include snacks, hair ties, tiny candles, etc. I didn’t end up reserving any of the January samples or curated boxes because none of them really appealed to me, so the whole box will be a surprise.

Do I recommend Birchbox? YES! I like many of the samples and love their points system so much that last month I pre-paid for another year of Birchbox! If you’d like to subscribe, I hope you consider using my referral link. If pre-paying is an option for you and you are sure you won’t get overwhelmed by samples, I recommend doing it (especially if they are having a pre-pay sale). Also make sure to review your samples each month (before the tenth of the following month) and send emails if you ever have problems with your order/box. The points add up quickly!

October and November 2014 Birchbox, Birchbox Shop Purchase, Surprise Free Samples

So I guess I’ve been a little busy and will be writing about TWO Birchboxes (and some other Birchbox stuff) in this post.

In October, I decided to get the “Laggies” box because I was out of mascara and really wanted to get a new one.

Screen Shot 2014-11-23 at 10.33.00 PM

Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator: I am happy with the size of this sample and the item itself. I put it in my shower last week and while I can’t tell if it works well or not, my experience has been a good one. (love!)

Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle: I’ve received this item before in a normal Birchbox, and was thrilled to get more. I have a couple other similar products that I’m using right now, but am looking forward to using this again. (love!)

TOCCA Crema da Mano Luxe – Hand Cream: Now I have two of these! Thanks, Birchbox! I am pretty sure I have tried something from this brand before and liked it. (like!)

ModelCo Power Lash Long Wear Black Mascara: I was a little sad this was a small sample because the ModelCo FIBRE LASHXTEND Lengthening Mascara (love that one!) I got in my first or second Birchbox was full-size, but I’ll still get plenty of use out of this one. Not a huge fan of this formula, but it’s good enough. (like!)

SAGE + fasten Onward Eau de Parfum: I like that it’s a roll-on but I’m not really a fan of the grapefruit. I think it’s the grapefruit. I don’t know… but this scent is odd… and I don’t love it.

I’m happy with 4 of the 5 products. Way to go, Birchbox!

Screen Shot 2014-11-23 at 10.47.29 PM

Chuao Chocolatier Assorted ChocoPod: Mmmm. Chocolate. I was really happy to see this extra in my box because I love chocolate. The chocolate was gone by the time I got around to taking this photo (a day or two later). ;)

RUFFIAN Nail Lacquer – RUFFIAN Naked: I really like one of the RUFFIAN polishes I received a while back, but I don’t know about this color and I still don’t love painting my own nails. I’ll probably still keep it because of the good experience with the purple one.

dr. brandtÂŽ pores no moreÂŽ vacuum cleaner™: I’m pretty sure I’ve tried at least one other dr. brandt product before and really liked it. Definitely looking forward to using this when I’m ready to open a new face care item! I have a few too many open right now…

amika Nourishing Mask: I was really happy to see this in the “choose one of your samples” email because I’ve liked some other amika products that I’ve tried and have considered buying this one. Hope I love it!

Not Soap, Radio Body Wash: I’m a fan of body wash and am looking forward to trying this one! I wonder if I’ll really smell like lemon after my shower.

MAKE Silk Cream Lipstick + Lip Primer: I received a full-size MAKE lipstick from Popsugar (Fall Style box?) and I like it, so I’m guessing I will also like this color and the primer. The sample size is pretty annoying, though. Wish they sent minis or something because this type of sample falls into the “looks free” and “should probably only use once” category.

Happy with 4 of the 6 items. Another Birchbox win!

——————————

I recently also used my Birchbox points and purchased some items from the Birchbox shop. It was an interesting experience because there was cleansing gel in the order, and the container was not secured so the gel got all over everything else. I emailed them about it and they immediately gave me some points and re-sent all the items. The second gel container was also not secured and leaked a little, but I told them it’ll be fine and I just hope the warehouse people change how they pack.

Anyway… $11 plus some points ended up getting me: 200 Birchbox points (aka $20 to spend in the Birchbox shop), two mystery sample packs (all beauty stuff), two small packs of LA FRESH Travel Lite Antiperspirant Wipes for Women (super useful!), two Camille Beckman Hand and Shower Cleansing Gel containers, two free Birchbox women’s “thank you” keychains (yay!), and two Birchbox Stacked Tanks (WOOHOO!).

Screen Shot 2014-11-23 at 11.15.04 PM

I wished for my closet to contain more gym tops and I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money to make that happen, and it looks like the world (and subscription box companies- got a Nike top for $2 thanks to Popsugar!) granted my wish. So happy I have two of these now! They seem to run a little small but I actually kind of like that because it’ll be nice to see it fit differently as time passes (and I hopefully get a bit smaller). ;)

Screen Shot 2014-11-23 at 11.14.12 PM

Birchbox had this item on sale that week and I don’t like running out of soap/cleanser, so I decided to pick up this one. Glad I ended up receiving two! I just hope they start securing this item when they ship it. The cap of the first one wasn’t totally on and I ended up getting some gel on most of my items. The second one was better but it was still added to the box (not in a bag or anything), so a little gel escaped again. They offered to send me a third one and I said it’s really not necessary. They still added 100 points, though.

Screen Shot 2014-11-23 at 11.13.35 PM

A little “thanks for being a subscriber” goodie from Birchbox. Love it when they do these kinds of things! It’s a little odd to have two of these, but I’m happy I do because I have a feeling it won’t take too long for me to wear out the first one.

Screen Shot 2014-11-23 at 11.15.43 PM

I’ve gotten these a few times because they’re a useful small/cheap item to grab when I’m just under the $35 mark and want to make sure I get the free mystery sample pack or other item from the bonus shop. They’ve come in handy a few times because of fitness classes and because some days I have to go to events in the evening (and my morning antiperspirant isn’t really working/present anymore).

The only mystery sample that really stood out was the little tube of Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel. I’m looking forward to trying it when I run out of other face mask/peel type products. Subscription boxes do a good job making sure I have plenty of these kinds of items to get by for months. ;)

——————————

While I’m here and writing about recent Birchbox experiences, I should probably also mention the free sample surprise that arrived a few days ago. Way to go, Birchbox Marketing team! Or whichever team made this happen…

Screen Shot 2014-11-23 at 11.32.15 PM

People seem to love Harvey Prince Yogini and Hello, so I guess I’m glad I get a chance to smell the Ageless perfume. I don’t really care for perfume samples because I don’t normally wear perfume, but it’s kind of fun to see what they smell like… especially when it’s a popular perfume brand that frequently gets mentioned by subscription box bloggers and YouTubers.

I already have a pink/coral LAQA & Co. Lip Lube (thanks to Birchbox?) and was amused by this purple one that arrived in this surprise package. At first I wasn’t sure how I could ever use it because it’s a bit of a wild color, but a few friends seem to think it looks good on me… or a little bit of purple could be paired with some other products. Guess I’ll have to play around with it and hope something works! If all else fails I’ll just have to see if I can attend some University of Washington alumni events (because Husky colors are purple and gold). ;)

Anyway… I think that’s it! I love Birchbox because of their points system… and customer service… and fun surprises. If you decide to subscribe, I hope you consider using my referral link. Just make sure to also watch for discount codes and other sales. I’m sure they’ll have plenty in late November and early December!

September 2014 Birchbox “Fresh Paint”

IMG_1474

I actually got a photo of my Birchbox this month! Amazing ;)

1. ChapStickÂŽ Dual-Ended Hydration Lock Moisturize & Renew: This is the “Birchbox Finds!” extra item. I don’t mind when they include things like this because they tend to pick useful (affordable) products. I received a similar ChapStick product last year (it wasn’t dual-ended so it wasn’t the same!) and really liked it, so I’m sure I’ll like this one.

2. Harvey Prince Hello – 50 ml: I don’t normally wear perfume so I don’t love receiving perfume samples, but I think they’re better than full bottles because I can’t just throw away full bottles. I’ve given some perfume samples away, but usually it doesn’t seem like it’s worth the effort to find people who want perfume samples. ANYWAY… as far as perfume samples go, I’m actually a little happy to see this one because I’ve heard good things about it (on blogs, YouTube, Instagram) and have been wanting to smell it. I guess I could do that at the perfume counter at the mall, but I love Birchbox (and other subscription boxes) because I’d rather avoid perfume counters and malls.

3. Macadamia Professional™ Healing Oil Spray – 2 oz.: Eeeee! This item makes me very happy!! I don’t know if it’s working on my hair or not, but I am happy with the scent and like what it’s supposed to do. It’s also super easy to use! I usually don’t like products that take a lot of skill or time to apply/use.

4. TOCCA Crema da Mano Luxe – Hand Cream: This is another great sample for me because I’ve read/heard good things about TOCCA and like little tubes that aren’t too big for the make-up bag that lives in my purse.

5. Avène Cleanance Soap-Free Gel Cleanser: I love cleansers! Wow. Awesome picks this month, Birchbox team! I already have a couple cleansers in the master bathroom and a couple in the shower, so I won’t be able to start using this one right away, but it’s nice to have some back-ups. I also like that it’s my first gel cleanser and potentially the first item I’ve received from this company.

6. TEMPTU S/B Highlighter: I’ve only received a few highlighters in subscription boxes and no other items from TEMPTU, so this was a nice item to see in my box. I don’t frequently use highlighters and received a full-size Benefit High-Beam a while ago so I should probably give this one away, but… maybe I’ll keep it and try it. I haven’t made up my mind yet.

Final thoughts? I’m a little overwhelmed by “beauty products” right now but I’m sure I’ll eventually get around to trying each product, and am glad the Birchbox team sent me a lot of items I’m looking forward to using. If you’d like to subscribe, I hope you consider using my referral link. Thanks for reading! :)

August 2014 Birchbox

official Birchbox.com image

1. Noir Cosmetics Long-Wear Eyeliner: I don’t use eyeliner, so it’s a good thing I have friends who do! It does look like a really nice liner. Hope my friend loves it.

2. Vasanti Detox Nutrient-Rich Purifying Facial Cleanser: I’ve received a lot of facial cleansers in recent months so I won’t be able to start using this for a little while, but I’m looking forward to trying it. Good sample size.

3, 4, 5. NexxusÂŽ Color Assure™ Pre-Wash Primer + NexxusÂŽ Color Assure™ Vibrancy Retention Shampoo + NexxusÂŽ Color Assure™ Vibrancy Retention Conditioner: These are great for traveling! A friend got this sample several months ago and gave them to me because she works for a hair salon, so I’ve already tried all of these products… and liked them! Might end up buying the full-size shampoo and conditioner in the future.

6. ModelCo Bronzer: This would have been a great item for someone who uses bronzer. Gave this product to a friend!

7. Supergoop!ÂŽ Forever Young Hand Cream with Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40 – 1 oz: I don’t want any more sunscreen or face serums right now, so I was happy when I realized this is hand cream! I’m using another one right now, but looking forward to trying this one. I like that it’s small enough to keep in the make-up bag that’s in my purse!

I think this was an “ok” Birchbox month for me. One of the most exciting things was probably that each of the hair products was listed as separate, so I got 70 Birchbox points for my reviews this month. I think this box could have been much more awesome with a lifestyle extra.

Birchbox news: Apparently they are now operating in Washington state! I wonder what they’re doing. Are they opening a warehouse or an office or a store? I hope it’s an office or a store. The one downside is that I’ll now have to pay sales tax for my boxes and for items I buy in their online store.
